    About the SAT

The SAT consists of two main sections: Reading and Writing and Math. You are given 64 minutes for the Reading and Writing section and 70 minutes for the Math section, making the total test duration 2 hours and 14 minutes. Each section is further divided into two equal modules, with a 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. The first module in each section includes a balanced mix of easy, medium, and difficult questions. Your performance in this module determines the difficulty level of the second module—if you perform well, the next set will be more challenging; otherwise, it will be comparatively easier.

    Section Breakdown

    Reading & Writing

The Reading and Writing section features short passages (sometimes in pairs), each followed by a single multiple-choice question. These questions are designed around four key content areas: Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas. To help manage time effectively, questions testing similar skills are grouped together and generally progress from easier to more difficult. This section is divided into two modules, and each module includes a mix of questions from all four domains. What the Passages Are LikePassages are brief, typically ranging from 25 to 150 words, and are drawn from a variety of subjects, including literature, history/social studies, humanities, and science. What the Questions Are LikeInformation and Ideas These questions assess your ability to understand, analyze, and interpret information. They focus on locating and evaluating ideas from texts and visual data such as tables, bar graphs, and line graphs.Craft and Structure These questions test vocabulary in context, as well as your ability to analyze how texts are written, understand tone and purpose, and make connections between related passages.Expression of Ideas This area evaluates how well you can improve the clarity and effectiveness of a passage, ensuring it meets specific writing goals.Standard English Conventions These questions measure your ability to edit text for correct grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation according to standard English rules.

The Math section is designed to assess the key areas of mathematics that are most important for success in college and future careers. These include:Algebra Advanced Math Problem-Solving and Data Analysis Geometry and TrigonometrySimilar to the Reading and Writing section, the Math section is divided into two modules. Throughout this section, you will encounter both multiple-choice and student-produced response (fill-in-the-answer) questions. These are intended to evaluate your understanding, accuracy, and ability to apply essential mathematical concepts and skills.Around 30% of the questions are context-based, often presented as word problems. These require you to interpret real-world scenarios—such as those related to science or social studies—and apply mathematical reasoning to arrive at the correct answer.Types of Math QuestionsThe questions are grouped into four main categories, with each module including a mix from all areas. Within each module, questions are generally arranged from easier to more difficult, giving you a fair opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and problem-solving ability.

    Frequently
    Asked Questions

The biggest change is that the SAT is now 100% digital . It's no longer a paper-and-pencil test. The exam is administered on computers or tablets at an official test center using the College Board's Bluebook™️ app. This change has led to a shorter test duration of about 2 hours and 14 minutes, down from the previous 3 hours. It is also an adaptive test, meaning the difficulty of the questions in the second module of each section adjusts based on your performance in the first module.

The digital SAT consists of two main sections: Reading & Writing and Math. Each section has two modules, and the entire test is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600, with each section contributing 200 to 800 points. The Reading & Writing section has 54 questions and a 64-minute time limit, while the Math section has 44 questions and a 70-minute time limit. Unlike the old paper-based test, there is no penalty for wrong answers, so it's always a good idea to guess if you're unsure

Yes! For the first time, you are allowed to use a calculator for the entire Math section . The Bluebook™️ app has a built-in Desmos graphing calculator, but you can also bring your own approved calculator. You cannot use your own calculator for the Reading & Writing section, but for math, you can use the built-in one or your own.

One of the benefits of the digital format is faster score delivery. Your scores are now released within days instead of weeks. Score reports are accessible through your College Board account. This quicker turnaround time allows you to make decisions and plan for college applications more efficiently.
